We at LCPO have a great passion for the most needy pit bulls most especially those that are deaf, either from birth or from a cause later in life.
It is very important to us that owners recognize the signs of a deaf pit bull, we often see that pit bulls or pit bull mixes that are deaf become abused or neglected because they have owners that don't seem to understand why their dog is "not listening". There could be a very good reason, they can't hear you (with their ears)!

Do you think your pit bull is deaf? If you feel your pit bull could be deaf it may not just be a hunch! Pit bulls can be born deaf, they can also become deaf from medical issues such as serious ear infection and ear infections are common in pit bulls.
If you feel your pit bull is deaf your first stop should be your veterinarian to have your pit bull evaluated. Veterinarians can diagnose deafness by observing your dog but can also conduct the BAER test (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) to confirm deafness.
Your next stop will need to be a positive reinforcement trainer! Deaf dogs are very intelligent and are trained very similarly to hearing dogs.
