LCPO is here to promote and assist in responsible pit bull ownership. Below you will find the basic needs of a pit bull, whether you are considering adopting, purchasing, have a stray fall into your hands or already own a pit bull you should ensure your dog is provided with these basic necessities.

Exercise:
As most anyone can tell you pit bulls are typically high energy dogs, even those that are more laid back or older still need some form of exercise daily. It is very important that you ensure your pit bull is receiving at least 2 hours of good exercise per day. Rest: While exercise is very important for your pit bull, rest is equally as important. For your dog's health and temperament they should be allowed to rest as often as they wish. A lack of rest can affect your pit bulls temperament as well as their health. Socialization: While all pit bulls may not be dog social we do suggest making your best effort at socializing your pit bull as well as keeping up on their socialization. This makes for a much happier, more comfortable pit bull. Love: Yes, that is right! Your pit bull needs love. Pit bulls are notorious for craving and in fact, requiring, human interaction. Pit bulls crave and in some ways may demand your attention. Make sure that you are taking the time out of each day to spend quality time with your pit bull. Mental Stimulation: Providing your pit bull with mental stimulation is very important to having a healthy, stable and happy pit bull. You can provide your pit bull with stimulation in a variety of ways such as food puzzles, treat toys, walks (on leash outside of your yard) and short training sessions through the day. Routine Vet Care: Whether your pit bull is showing signs of illness or not they should be receiving routine vet care and exams. It is the law that all dogs must be vaccinated against rabies, you should also ensure your dog is being checked by your veterinarian at least yearly to ensure they are as healthy as they can be! Protection from the elements: Be it heat or cold it is important that you provide your pit bull with the necessities to keep them safe from the elements. Pit bulls should never live outside. We highly recommend a sweater for the colder months and to ensure your pit bull does not become overheated in the warmer months. Training: At LCPO we feel training is one of the top key elements to being a responsible pit bull owner. We suggest each owner sign up for at least one basic training class and keep up on training with your pit bull for their lifetime. This helps with stimulation, manners and to ensure you and your pit bull are representing all pit bulls in a positive way. |
Other items you must consider for your pit bull are:

You must keep your dog licensed, you must do so yearly or purchase a lifetime license.
A crate, we suggest every pit bull owner have a crate and do their best to make the crate a positive space for your pit bull to have as their very own.
